Texas Hold’em Poker is the most popular Poker game in the world. Players love to explore this game in different sections such as a live casino.
In this game, every player is dealt with two cards, for their eyes only and the dealer spreads five cards. The dealer divides the cards like this – three at once, then another, then another. Players use this system and create their best five-card hand.
Before and after each card is revealed, players take turns to bet. All players must have to put the same amount of chips in the pot if they want to stay in the hand and see the next card.
So who wins this battle in the end? The best poker hand. We have mentors earlier that you need to use the dealer’s five-card system and create your best possible hand with these cards.
Rules of Texas Hold’em Poker
Starting the game, we need to understand the basic rules. The rules are pretty simple if you have tried other card games. In this game, eachplayer is dealt two private cards which are known as hole cards that belong to them alone.
Next is board means five community cards are dealt face-up, to form the ‘board’.
All players in the game use these shared community cards in conjunction with their two private cards they picked before. This is how players make their best possible five-card poker hand.
In Texas Hold’em, a player may use any combination of the seven cards available.
The four major variations of Hold’em are separated from each other by their betting limits. Let’s understand the betting limit with these points:
- Limit Texas Hold’em: A pre-determined betting limit on each round of betting
- No-Limit Texas Hold’em: When there is no limit of the amount for betting
- Pot Limit Texas Hold’em: When a player can bet any amount but up to the size of the pot.
- Mixed Texas Hold’em: The limit between rounds of Limit Texas Hold’em and No-Limit Texas Hold’em.
How to Play Texas Hold’em Poker?
Rules are understood and now let’s take you to the next segment where we will tell you how we can play this game. To keep the rules in mind, you have to understand a few points about the game and with some practices, you can hit the winning button of this game.
The Blinds
In Hold’em, a marker is known as ‘the button’ or ‘the dealer button.’ The button indicates which player is the nominal dealer for the game.
Before starting the game, the player immediately clockwise from the button posts the “small blind” means the first forced bet. Now the player clockwise from the small blind posts the “big blind” and this blind is twice the size of the small blind. These blinds can vary depending on the stakes and betting structure.
As we discussed earlier the betting limits of the game, you would see the differences.
For example, in a ₹2/₹4 Limit game, the small blind is ₹1 and the big blind is ₹2.
In Pot Limit and No Limit games, the games are referred to by the size of their blinds.
Even the players also place ante bet which is a forced bet small than the blind by all players in the pot.
Now, each player receives two hole cards. Betting action moves forward clockwise around the table. It starts with the player who posts immediately clockwise from the big blind.
Player Betting Options
In betting options, you will be introduced with some forms of Poker such as fold, check, bet, call, or raise. Each action depends on the previous player’s action. Okay, let’s clarify this point. If nobody has placed any bet, then a player may decline to bet but keep his card which is called as “check.”
If a player has placed the bet, then subsequent players can fold, call or raise. The call is the term to match the betting from the previous player.
Pre-Flop
Each player will see his hole cards and the player gets the options to play his hand by raising the big blind. The process starts the left of the big blind, which is considered a ‘live’ bet on this round. The Player has the option to fold, call or raise.
For example, if your big blind was ₹2, it would cost ₹2 to call, or at least ₹4 to raise. Remember one thing that the betting structure varies with different variations of the game.
The Flop
The flop is processed when three cards are dealt face-up on the board. These three cards on the flop are community cards and these cards are available to all players still in the hand.
Now, when you start betting on the flop, the active player immediately clockwise from the button. The betting options are similar to pre-flop (if nobody has previously bet).
The Turn
The turn is dealt face-up on the board when the betting action is completed for the flop round. The turn is the fourth community card and it’s also known as “Fourth Street”.
Next round starts with the active player immediately clockwise from the button.
The River
After the turn round, next is the river. It’s also known as “Fifth Street” anddealt face-up on the board. The river is the fifth and final community card in a Hold’em game.
Betting again starts with the active player immediately clockwise from the button.
The Showdown
This is the final betting round. If there is more than one remaining player, the last player to bet or raise shows their cards. Remember there should be no bet on the final round in which case the player immediately clockwise from the button shows their cards first.
The player who has the best five-card poker hand wins the pot.
In the case of identical hands, the pot will be divided between the players with the best hands

Time Required: 15 Minutes
What You Need:
- 52-Card Deck
- 2-20 Players

Here's How:
- The two players to the left of the dealer put out blind bets. The player directly to the dealer's left puts out the small blind, while the player two to the dealer's left puts out the big blind, which is twice as much as the small blind.
Don't know what blinds are? Read more about Betting Basics - Every player is dealt two cards, face down. These are called hole cards or pocket cards.
- The action, or the first move, falls on the player to the left of the big blind. They can either call the blind, raise it, or fold. The size of a raise must be at least twice the size of the bet preceding it; the maximum depends on whether you are playing with a limit or no-limit betting structure. Betting then continues around the table, clockwise.
- After the betting round is completed, three cards are dealt face up in the center of the table, which is referred to as the board. The first three cards in Texas Hold'em are called the flop. These cards are “community cards” meaning everyone can (and will need to) use at least three of them in combination with their own hole cards to make the best hand.

- Another round of betting.
- The final card is dealt face up. This card is also called fifth street or the river.
- A final round of betting occurs. The remaining players show their cards and the person who can make the best five-card hand by combining their pocket cards with the cards on the board wins.
Note: In some rare cases in Texas Hold'em, the five cards making up the board will actually be the best hand, in which case everyone left in the hand divides up the poker. - The deal passes to the next player to the left (who was small blind last hand) and a new hand is dealt.
